The Magic Of Mirrors

Gray & Walter Interior Design, Kenneth Walter, Chicago Interior Designers

Decorating with mirrors can be tricky, not if you’re King Louis, he had all the best talent at his fingertips to make a gorgeous palace for his Queen and the rest of the royals. Even Marie Antoinette had to escape the palace to her “simple” little hamlet. So what do you do when you want to change your space? As an interior designer I would recommend a mirror, I always say go big or go home! I have great sources in Chicago at my fingertips, so I can snap up a handsome mirror just like that! Here’s a great round-up of some handsome mirrors and fantastic ways to use them in your interiors.

MAKING AN ENTRANCE

This is probably obvious to you, but people like to look at themselves in the mirror, particularly when they’ve just arrived. It’s always nice to make sure everything is in place for your appointment, host or paramour. Whatever the case, we’ve got you covered.

TYPICAL MIRROR APPLICATIONS

Once you add a mirror you have visually enlarged a space, even a tiny one. Designer Tip: paint the walls a light hue or white of your liking to make the space appear lighter and larger in overall appearance.

Most people hate mirrors in Dining Rooms because they don’t want to see themselves eating. However, it works fine in the above application because of location and height.

THE BATHROOM

Mirrors are an obvious necessity in a bathroom, but many of the examples shown are a bit unusual and worth a try. What do you think?

It’s always a good idea to have two mirrors at right angles to do your hair, this works even better when one or both are on a hinge. Designer Tip: Whenever possible be sure to have sconce light in addition to recessed lighting. This is helpful to the ladies with make-up and the guys when we shave.

THE SWEET SURPRISE

I’m crazy about walls of mirrors in all different sizes and shapes, with or without artwork interspersed. Here are a few other ways to add mirrors and more light to your space. Designer Tip: Try using antique mirror shelves in a bar, bathroom or etagere.

Although the stair is lucite, it could be replicated with mirrored risers for added reflection. The backsplash could be done up in mirror (clear, antique or smoked). What’s your pleasure?

Give Me Those Ruby Slippers

Hello November, oh how I love this cozy season! The downside in Chicago is the lack of sunshine and shorter days. Since the time change I have been thinking about perking up my space. This is easy for me as an interior designer, I also happen to enjoy color. How about you? Winter is coming, it’s so important to brighten up our space as much as possible. Consider this post a public service if you are terrified of color (I’m smiling and winking at you). Diana Vreeland reportedly told the legendary decorator Billy Baldwin she wanted her living room to be a garden in hell, the rest is history. (see illustration above by the late Jeremiah Goodman) While this may be too extreme for you it’s not too late to embrace a little color. When it comes to color what kind of person are you? Let’s explore…

Classic Decorating

Perhaps you are a bit more traditional, there’s nothing wrong with that. These two rooms have classical proportions and are quite elegant. The top image is more restrained with color, the second takes a bolder approach. It is interesting to note I am seeing more traditional decorating in the shelter magazines. I have also noticed more colorful interiors even if they are contemporary.

Adding Color With Artwork

Another great way to enliven your space is adding colorful artwork to a neutral interior. I’m a firm believer that great artwork makes all the difference in the world. I have seen many people forget how important this is. While good furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories are important we cannot underestimate the importance of artwork. I call this the extra ten percent, it literally makes or breaks your space.

Unexpected Colorful Surprises

Who ever said pops of color are only for pillows and throws? We had a great time designing a happy guest bathroom for our client’s pool house. While this isn’t for the faint of heart it filled my client’s heart with joy.

Rhapsody In Blue

Our client wanted a colorful yet tailored living room, the luxurious and durable fabrics are elegant yet  pet/kid friendly. The Murano glass lamps complement the gorgeous painting above, this is what I would call a happy ending!

Vive La France

Our California client wanted a French Provencal feeling that was clean and not too fussy. I think the outcome is pleasing to the eye. What do you think?

A Modern Tuscan Kitchen

We are inundated with white kitchens lately, they are gorgeous but certainly not for everyone. This client wanted something that was unique. The cabinets are hand glazed by our special artisans.

When In Doubt Use Red

Look how this fun pop of red enlivens a soaring and neutral contemporary space designed for modern living. The second photo has a deep coral hue which sets off the dark furniture, light trim and stunning artwork collection. Did you know red is my favorite color?

Colorful Surprises

This Art Deco rug is quite colorful with a gorgeous pattern to keep you enthralled. I highly recommend bolder rugs. I typically shop for the rug at the end of the project instead of designing the room around the rug, the results are more exciting! The exciting painting below is full of color and gorgeous calligraphy, they work well together!

Color My World

Here’s a bevy of projects that may inspire you to add a little more color to your space. The inspiring images range from traditional to contemporary, some show color as an accent and others are very colorful. What speaks to you?

The best part about being an interior designer is creating spaces that reflect your preferences and tolerance for color. Not every space needs a lot of color, this is not a one size fits all proposition. Luckily we are all different, that’s what makes my task fun and life more interesting. It’s a thrill to create a personal space that reflects who you are. I’ll be thrilled to work with you, when we’re done you’ll be tickled pink. I can’t wait to hear from you!

Big Hugs,

10 Surefire Ways To A Glamorous Room

Kenneth Walter, Gray & Walter, Chicago Interior Design

Hello gorgeous, you look fantastic! Oh yes, I’m talking to you, but your space, hmm that’s another story. While you’re a knockout (I’m a great judge after all) your place has seen better days. It’s ok, I’m not judging, tell me all about it. I know you’re very busy and stressed out, it’s my job to make your dreams come true. I have seen it all as an interior designer, here in Chicago and farther afield we tend to put ourselves on the back burner. So now let’s focus on you, it’s your turn~here we go, read on if you have always wanted a glamorous space to curl up.

SETTING THE SCENE WITH GORGEOUS MATERIALS

Kenneth Walter, Gray & Walter, Chicago Interior Design

Consider your gorgeous environment as a sexy extension of you, think about what makes you feel beautiful as a woman, for guys think of what makes you feel handsome. Think of how you feel when you are wearing that item everyone compliments, it instills natural confidence, am I right? The same goes for the interior. The materials you find beautiful or handsome can add natural glamour to your space. This applies to fur (real or faux), shimmering fabrics, glass, metal, marble, lucite or anything that reflects light.

I am constantly influenced by many things that cross my eye each day. A big inspiration for me is film and travel, as a kid I was seduced by glamorous movie sets. I think of my clients as the star of their film. A glamorous space is a wonderful backdrop to live your life in, you may even want to show it off–but it’s ok to have some things just for you.

DINING ROOM

Although glamour might not be your first thought when you see the image above, I find the space glamorous due to the gorgeous wrought iron on the windows and magnificent marble columns. The white walls are so elegant and fresh, note the delicate lines on the lovely caned chairs. Now lets focus on the second room, check out the acid green chairs using two different fabrics, the Murano glass light fixtures and fabulous mirror.

I know a glamorous bedroom is a no brainer, you would be surprised if I told you how many people choose to live. We can create a very sensuous place to live out your fantasies. Live it up–you are worth it.

POWDER ROOM

So you are allowing someone into your gorgeous place, well done my little crocodile! A powder room is a great way to get your feet wet with a designer. Why not begin the journey and create a space your guests will enjoy using, they may never leave!

MASTER BATHROOM

No one can deny the pleasure of a great shower or bath at the beginning or end of your day. Frankly there is nothing like it. There is no better way to prepare for the adventures that are in store for you. White stone is very popular lately, but do remember that many of the most beautiful surfaces are very porous. Inside Tip: Take care to have your precious stone sealed or select non-porous materials in the colors you love most.

THE CLOSET

Kenneth Walter, Gray & Walter, Chicago Interior Design

I personally have a small closet, I like it this way so I can survey all my shirts, pants, jackets and suits easily. Some of us MUST have a larger closet which is totally fine by me. Let’s plan it out properly! We will come over to review what you have, measure the amount of lineal hanging you require and design a space fit for a queen, king or something in-between. I love using lots of mirror, glass and wood in closets. What turns you on?

THE JEWELRY

Kenneth Walter, Gray & Walter, Chicago Interior Design

Gorgeous lighting is like jewelry for your space, think of the reflections the beautiful glass or crystal will make. If decorative lighting isn’t your thing we can achieve the same details with mirrors, tables or accessories.

Who said kitchens can’t be sexy?

THE TAKEAWAY

Kenneth Walter, Gray & Walter, Chicago Interior Design

We all have an idea of what is beautiful to us, don’t we? I hope you will take these ideas and add a little more glamour to your daily routine. You don’t need to do everything right away, start small with a few things: consider adding a pair of sexy stools, a great chandelier or table. When in doubt try channeling your inner-glam spirit animal.

Have fun and enjoy yourself, ACTION, it’s your scene-
